Whether it’s singing a song for them, calling their kids, pretending to be Santa, teaching them a Spanish phrase, making a Facebook fan page, or whatever else, people pay you to do these things for them.
When you set a 10X goal, you’re required to think very differently about your daily behaviors. You’re required to be more serious in all aspects of your life. You’re required to eliminate limiting thinking and consumptive distractions.

Paying more than you owe to the IRS is another mistake that could leave you short of your goal. About two-thirds of taxpayers claim the standard deduction, but millions would pay a lower tax bill if they itemized deductions, according to H&R Block’s Tax Institute. Homeowners typically benefit most from itemizing, but renters who pay high state income taxes and make large charitable contributions could also save money if they itemized. And those savings could help to grow your million-dollar kitty.

Of course, there are always the stories of people who make an insane amount of money online, but they are the exceptions and it’s unfortunately not as easy as running a few Facebook ads and making bank. Here’s how I know: I’ve built my entire career online. It’s made me a millionaire and helped me reach financial independence at the age of 30. Here’s what I’ve learned over the past 8+ years making money online, both the opportunities and the challenges.
I think you missed the point: these words have helped me. I have no consumer debt, a reasonable mortgage payment with a lot of equity, a healthy retirement account based on my age and income, and strong professional prospects. I earn money, live within my means, save and invest that money, and repeat the process. I am well on my way to becoming a millionaire, and I wish you the same success.
According to Jen Smith, her parents were intelligent, hard-working adults. Unfortunately, they always lived paycheck to paycheck. Jen eventually married her husband, a construction worker who made just $8 an hour, and how to become a millionaire as a programmer from one minimum wage job to the next. Eventually, she realized that she was just one missed step away from being homeless.
Hey Neil! Great post, and so approachable/doable too! I had the opportunity to go to some awesome events- actually one where you would soon be speaking, as a matter of fact! Lack of confidence held me back if I’m honest, which is weird as I know many successful people and am seen as successful myself. I have a list of people who agreed to be to interviewed/collaborate but I stupidly held back! A credibility thing I think- I was told by a media expert (paraphrased)-‘why would they give you the time of day’. What would you advise around feeling intimidated and how to overcome it? And how to structire an interview- what to ask!
But here’s the truth: Your ideas are worthless. If it’s a good idea, most likely many other people have had the same idea. So why do some people make millions of dollars on a business idea and you don’t?
Now let’s assume you start saving $5,500 a year, or roughly $458 a month, early on — say, at age 27 — and you continue doing so until age 67, which is what the Social Security Administration considers full retirement age for anyone born in 1960 or later. Let’s also assume that you invest that money and take in an average annual 8% return over 40 years. Because IRAs offer tax-deferred growth, you won’t pay taxes on your earnings until you reach retirement, which means you get to reinvest your total gains year after year. So if we take that $458 monthly investment and apply it to a 40-year term, we arrive at a grand total of $1.4 million, and it’s all possible thanks to the power of compounding.
Next we’ll look at ONE TRILLION dollars. This is that number we’ve been hearing so much about. What is a trillion dollars? Well, it’s a million million. It’s a thousand billion. It’s a one followed by 12 zeros.
Marry a rich person. You can marry someone rich and become a millionaire. Yea, most people marry for money these days so it’s no big deal anymore. But it takes a great deal of heartache to live with somebody you have no affection for.
“There’s an honest graft, and I ‘m an example of how it works. I might sum up the whole thing by sayin’: Just let me explain by examples. My party’s in power in the city, and it ‘s goin’ to undertake a lot of public improvements. Well, I ‘m tipped off, say, that they ‘re going to layout a new park at a certain place. I see my opportunity and I take it. I go to that place and I buy up all the land I can in the neighborhood. Then the board of this or that makes its plan public, and there is a rush to get my land, which nobody cared particular for before. Ain’t it perfectly honest to charge a good price and make a profit on my investment and foresight? Of course it is. Well, that ‘s honest graft. . . . It ‘s just like lookin’ ahead in Wall Street or in the coffee or cotton market. It ‘s honest graft, and I’m lookin’ for it every day in the year. I will tell you frankly that I ‘ve got a good lot of it, too.”

Sell baked goods. Working parents might not have the time to whip up a birthday cake or cupcakes for school parties. That’s where you come in if you can create tasty baked goods. A friend of mine who is a single mom started making cupcakes as a way to keep herself occupied while staying with her dad when he was undergoing chemotherapy. She posted a picture of her cupcakes on Facebook and instantly received several orders from friends. Now she makes about $200 a month making cupcakes for others who hear about her through word of mouth or see pictures of her cupcakes on her Facebook page.
Usability study at a Google office: Usually, you’ll meet up with a Google researcher and answer a few questions about a Google product. Needless to say, for this to work, you have to live close to one of Google’s offices.
You don’t need a high-paying job to become a millionaire by the time you retire (or even sooner). All you really need is a smart savings and investment strategy from the get-go, along with a willingness to adopt a lifestyle that supports that strategy. If you make savings a priority early on in your career, you’ll be well on your way to reaping what could be a significant financial reward down the line.
