Bezos put customers first at the expense and sometimes to the dismay of his shareholders. Amazon went public in May 1997, bled money for the next six years, and barely eked out a profit for the decade after. To Bezos, those losses and other quarterly numbers mattered less than keeping prices low and customer service exceptional, so that the flywheel could keep on turning. Amazingly, Bezos eventually convinced Wall Street to mostly disregard his company’s lackluster quarterly earnings, too.
“OK, it’s a double,” he shot back. “But we’re going to be number one on this product–and it’s ranked 1,451 in all of personal care, number two in vitamins. This is crazy! This is bonkers!” Whatever you want to call it, within hours, Pharmapacks would be the number-one seller on Amazon for both of those products–a ranking it would hold for weeks.
The increase in capex has been focused on expanding Amazon’s physical infrastructure, such as acquiring warehouses and AWS investments. Any potential net profits are allocated towards investments into the company’s long-term interests. Amazon’s revenue currently accounts for less than one percent of U.S. retail market. The question for investors is whether the company will ever evolve and convert its operations to capitalize on its strength growth model.
All the while, more than a hundred workers, mostly women, stood at tables in the warehouse packing products into bubble-pack containers that looked like tiny space pods–Colgate toothpaste, Pantene shampoo. There are a few reasons why Amazon is so effective yet one of the motivations behind why they’re so fruitful is on account of they enable anybody to offer or purchase items on their site.

In addition to direct sales, Amazon provides a platform for other retailers to sell products to buyers. Products sold through Amazon’s partner retailers are often less common items or those with a higher purchase price, allowing Amazon to avoid holding slow-moving inventory that could dilute profit. While Amazon does not assess a fee for its retailer partners to list items for sale, the company does retain a portion of the sales price as commission.

You pay a fee per item when you sell it based on price and type of item it is or you can get a subscription if you are a large scale seller and plan to list a lot of stuff and you pay a flat fee (plus commissions). You essentially pay them a dollar plus their commission, which is usually between 8-15%. It is different for different kinds of items. There is no charge for listing most things, you pay when you sell. If you are only talking a few things here and there, eBay is usually your best bet and you get your money sooner, but if you are talking a business, then Amazon may be better. eBay costs less but more people shop on Amazon.
Even if you don’t offer the whole line, you may be able to generate more sales on your own site and on Amazon by extending your product line to include items your competitors offer for which you don’t have a substitute.
